Stacey Abrams Nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize for Promoting ‘Nonviolent Change Via the Ballot Box’

It has been reported today that according to a Norwegian lawmaker, Dem. Stacey Abrams has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize for her work to promote nonviolent change via the ballot box.

Lars Haltbrekken, a Socialist Party member of Storting, Norway’s parliament said that he believes “Abrams’ work follows in Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s footsteps in the fight for equality before the law and for civil rights.”

“Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society,” Haltbrekken added.

This comes on the heels of the announcement that Petter Eide, also a Socialist Left member of the Storting, nominated the Black Lives Matter movement for the Peace Prize as well.

In his nomination letter, Eide wrote that he had nominated Black Lives Matter “for their struggle against racism and racially motivated violence.”

As former President Trump was trying to get a grip on the riots that were encompassing the nation following the death of George Floyd in police custody, Abrams made some strong accusations against him.

“Authoritarians polarize citizens into patriots v enemies. Discredit oversight institutions like inspectors general & the media. Target courts to bolster bad behavior. Final act? Dissolve the bonds of democracy, militarize police and crush the vote. Trump is near his end game,” Abrams said on June 1, 2020, in response to a video clip where Trump suggested deploying the military to get the riots under control.

On June 6, 2020, Abrams sent out a call in a response to a tweet which talked about “protesters” being arrested.

“Calling all lawyers & protesters! Thank you to @southerncenter for always being on the side of justice,” Abrams said.

Abrams also lamented in a June 2, 2020 tweet that “The evil of voter suppression and the potential power of voting are not easy to tackle or harness.”
