High School Football Coach to be Reinstated after He Was Fired for Praying on the Field After Games Following Supreme Court Win

A former High School football coach in Washington state is set to be reinstated after the Supreme Court previously ruled in his favor.

The news comes after a review of court documents that were filed Tuesday.

Kitsap Sun reported in part:

Attorneys for Joe Kennedy and the Bremerton School District have agreed that the former high school assistant football coach will return to the team no later than March 15, 2023, eight years after he was placed on leave and ultimately not rehired after praying with students at the 50-yard line following games.

Kennedy was the assistant coach of the Bremerton High School football team prior to his dismissal and he must be reinstated on or before March 15, 2023, according to the documents.

Additionally, the Bremerton School District cannot retaliate against Kennedy for “conduct that complies with the terms of the Court’s Order.”

The district cannot interfere with or prohibit Kennedy from offering a prayer consistent with the Supreme Court’s opinion, the documents added.

Starnes Media Group editor Caleb Parke called the news, “A big win for coaches across America.”

“I’ve had the honor of meeting Coach Kennedy — he was extremely gracious, humble, and inspiring. Go get ’em, coach!” Parke declared.

Kennedy will also be entitled to attorneys’ fees and costs although the U.S. District Court will decide those amounts according to the district after an “exacting process.”

In a statement, the district said, “At this point, the School District has not received any documentation for any amount of attorney fees.”

“The extent of insurance coverage for a potential attorney fees judgment is the subject of continuing discussions between the School District and its insurers,” the district explained in the statement.
