Former President Donald Trump has responded to the FBI raid on Mar-A-Lago. Today the former president filed a lawsuit that would temporarily block the FBI from reviewing the material taken from his Florida home until a special master is appointed to review what the FBI has taken.
Trump is also requesting that the government provide a more detailed inventory of what was taken and return anything that was not within the scope of the search warrant.
After filing the lawsuit Trump issued a written statement:
“This Mar-a-Lago Break-In, Search, and Seizure was illegal and unconstitutional, and we are taking all actions necessary to get the documents back, which we would have given to them without the necessity of the despicable raid of my home, so that I can give them to the National Archives until they are required for the future Donald J. Trump Presidential Library and Museum.”
A spokesman for DOJ Anthony Coley responded to Trump’s action with, “The Aug. 8 search warrant at Mar-a-Lago was authorized by a federal court upon the required finding of probable cause. The Department is aware of this evening’s motion. The United States will file its response in court.”
Currently, another case involving the raid on Mar-A-Lago is awaiting the redacted affidavit used to get the search warrant to be filed. The DOJ has been given until Thursday to file it with explanation redactions.
In Trump’s suit, he accuses the government of violating his Fourth Amendment against unreasonable search and seizure.
“Law enforcement is a shield that protects Americans. It cannot be used as a weapon for political purposes. Therefore, we seek judicial assistance in the aftermath of an unprecedented and unnecessary raid on President Trump’s home at Mar-a-Lago.”
The complaint goes on to say, “Politics cannot be allowed to impact the administration of justice.”
The public awaits more information on why the former president’s home was raided, this is something that hasn’t happened before in the history of America. The DOJ is staying tightlipped and seemingly unwilling to disclose any information. It seems that it may be dragged out in court.
