The memorials for former GOP Kansas Sen Bob Dole has not been without controversy, as it was reported yesterday that Dole’s wife and former GOP North Carolina Sen Elizabeth Dole dismissed a volunteer event planner helping to organize his memorials after she was made aware of his alleged ties to organizing a Jan. 6 rally.
Dole’s decision to cut ties with Tim Unes was first reported by The New York Times, which said Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) had raised the issue with a Dole family contact.
Steve Schwab, a Dole family spokesman and CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation, said in a statement yesterday, “Yesterday, I made Senator Elizabeth Dole aware of Mr. Unes’ alleged involvement in the events of January 6, 2021.”
“Senator Dole was previously unaware of his participation and terminated his volunteer role,” Schwab added in the statement.
A source familiar with the matter has said that McConnell’s office confirmed the reporting in The Times.
Unes is one of dozens of people so far who have been subpoenaed by the Jan. 6 select committee and was listed on permit paperwork for the rally as “Stage Manager.”
Fox News’ Tucker Carlson said about the situation, “Technically, Mitch McConnell is the Republican leader in the United States Senate.”
“But in real life, on the issues that matter, Mitch McConnell is an instrument of the left,” Carlson insisted.
Carlson described Unes as a Republican event planner who served in that role for 25 years and described the move by McConnell as an “incredibly, cruel thing to do” simply because he “Doesn’t like Trump.”
