Former Missouri Democratic Senator Claire McCaskill, who is now an MSNBC contributor and won twice in a Republican state, recently called the on-going election a “wake-up call” for Democrats, who were far too “overconfident” going in when speaking to NBC‘s Today show.
Speaking on MSNBC, McCaskill said that “Whether you are talking guns or…abortion…or gay marriage and rights for transexuals and other people who we as a party have tried to ‘look after’ and make sure they are treated fairly.”
She continued, “As we circled the issues we left voters behind and Republicans dove in, with a vengeance and grabbed those voters, and we’ve seen this shift I’ve seen it in the south, I’ve seen it in the rural areas of my state.”
“We need to get back to the meat and potatoes issues, we’ve got to get back to the issues where we are taking care of their families and we also need to quit acting like we are smarter than everybody else because we’re not.”
New York House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez won re-election this year, but her winning percentage of votes was slimmer than in 2018, dropping from 78% to 69%.
AOC believes that she is the future of the party and let McCaskill know, sharing the clip of her on MSNBC and asking, “Why do we listen to people who lost elections as if they are experts in winning elections?”
She claimed that “McCaskill tried her approach. She ran as a caravan-hysteria Dem& lost while grassroots organizers won progressive measures in MO.”
“Her language here shows how she took her base for granted,” the Congresswoman added.
