U.S. Representative Alex Mooney (WV) announced his bid for West Virginia Senator. The Seat is currently held by Senator Joe Manchin (D).
According to AP Joe Manchin is the last Democrat standing in statewide office in West Virginia. Mooney’s announcement comes after he has taken shots at Manchin. Manchin endorsed David McKinley in the May primary. McKinley and Mooney were forced to face each other after West Virginia lost a U.S. House seat over population loss. This did not sit well with Mooney.
Mooney ended up winning both the primary and the general election and how a week after the midterm elections has announced he is taking on Manchin in 2024.
However, Manchin has yet to announce if he will run for reelection but we would guess that it is likely. Manchin has held the seat since a special election in 2010. He was previously the 34th governor of West Virginia.
Currently, Manchin is best known for his swing vote in the Senate, with a 50/50 Senate Manchin has wielded much power over the Biden Administration.
Mooney was just reelected to his 5th term in the House. On “Talkline” Tuesday morning Mooney told host Hoppy Kercheval, “I’m announcing right now that I am officially running for the United States Senate for the seat that’s open in two years that Joe Manchin currently is in, and I’m all in.”
He added, “Republicans need to take the West Virginia seat in two years for the sake of this country”.
With or without Manchin running in 2024 it will be a Senate seat election that will be watched.
