Speaking at the annual Munich Security Conference in Germany, Bill Gates told CNBC Host Hadley Gamble, “We’ll have another pandemic. It will be a different pathogen next time.”
Gates alludes that the worst of the Covid-19 pandemic is over, when asked where were are today in beating Covid-19 by Gamble.
Gates answers Gamble’s question: “Sadly the virus itself, particularly the variant called Omnicron is a type of vaccine B cell and T cell immunity and it’s done a better job of getting out to the world population than we have with vaccines.”
Gates continues to cite data from Africa that 80% of people have been exposed to either the vaccine or the virus. He then explains, “that means the chance of severe disease, which is mainly associated with being elderly and having obesity or diabetes. Those risks are now dramatically reduced because of that infection exposure.”

Gates goes on to lament that we “didn’t do a great job on therapeutics… vaccines it took us in over two years to be in oversupply. Today there are more vaccines than there is demand for vaccines… next time we should try and make it instead of two years we should make it more like 6 months.”
Gates believes this is possible next time because of the mRNA platform we now have. Gates concluded his answer with, “It took us a lot longer this time than it should have.”
During the panel, he talked about the next pandemic highlighting, “The cost of being ready for the next pandemic is not that large. It’s not like climate change. If we’re rational, yes, the next time we’ll catch it early.”
No one can be certain when the next pandemic will be, but Gates seems to be certain there will be another one and it may be soon.
