House Votes 222-208 to Hold Mark Meadows in Criminal Contempt

The House voted late Tuesday to hold Mark Meadows in criminal contempt. Liz Cheney (R-WY) and Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) voted with Democrats.

The vote refers Donald Trump’s former Chief of Staff to the Justice Department on criminal contempt charges for refusing to testify before the select committee about the events on January 6th at the Capitol. Meadows did provide the committee with documents but under executive privilege reduced to testify before the committee.

Steve Bannon also refused to testify in front of the January 6th committee and was also referred to the Justice Department for criminal contempt charges. Bannon’s trial is currently set for July of 2022.

In an interview with Hannity Meadows explained his stance, “The executive privilege that Donald Trump has claimed is his to waive. It’s not mine to waive. It’s not Congress’s to wave.”

We reported earlier that the January select committee voted to hold Meadows in Contempt of Congress. He declined to speak to the committee under executive privilege.

Impeachment pusher Adam Schiff shared his predictable feelings about it all on Twitter after the vote.

“Last week, Mark Meadows informed @January6thCmte he would not cooperate further – abandoning his duty to country. Tonight, the House voted him in contempt and referred him for criminal prosecution. We acted with urgency. The Justice Department must do the same.”

Nancy Pelosi also took to Twitter to gloat about the vote to hold Mark meadows in contempt of Congress.

“Tonight, the House voted on a bipartisan basis to hold Mark Meadows, who has key information on the #January6th attack, in contempt of Congress. In doing so, we fulfill our duty to the Constitution and the nation to find the truth of that dark day.”

Time will tell what will come of these charges against Meadows and Bannon, but it appears that the January 6th select committee is trying to throw around their weight as much as they can.
