Report: Senate Moving Forward Aggressively Now on Voting Legislation, Shelving Build Back Better Act

According to a report today from NBC News, the Senate is now expected to shelve the “Build Back Better” act and instead move forward aggressively now on voting legislation.

The Hill’s Joe Concha remarked about the report, “One has to believe that shelving BBB is much more than just about Manchin and Sinema.”

“More Dems had to have privately stated they were uncomfortable backing it given (A) Inflation and (B) The latest CBO score making it impossible to defend and (C) Biden’s non-existent coattails,” Concha added.

CNN’s Manu Raju also reported that according to a source, talks between U.S. Sen Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Joe Biden are “NOT going well on Build Back Better.

A huge sticking point is apparently the Child Tax Credit which Manchin wants “cut” and to “zero it out,” according to a source they are “very far apart.”

Democrat journalist Judd Legum lamented, “Manchin originally focused on a number, 1.5T. Then he basically got his number (1.75T) and got the clean energy standard scrapped but it’s not enough. If you wanted to kill BBB completely, this is how you would do it.”

Yesterday, we reported that Senators voted 50-49 along party lines to raise the debt ceiling by $2.5 trillion after a deal for a one-time filibuster exemption.

Following the passing of that bill, U.S. Sen Raphael Warnock (D-GA) called for Democrats to potentially try to do that with the “federal voting rights legislation.”

Meanwhile, progressives are furious, like Mark Jacobs, who declared in a tweet, “I can’t stand looking at Joe Manchin anymore. He makes me sick.”

“He’s America’s version of Paul von Hindenburg, not actively fascist himself but doing everything necessary to pave the way for a fascist takeover,” Manchin insisted.
