2019 Kamala Harris Tweet Defending Jussie Smollett Goes Viral As Trial For Alleged Hate Crime Hoax Set to Begin

In August 2020, we reported a flashback of how after former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett accused attackers in January 2019 of shouting racial slurs and saying, “This is MAGA country,” while assaulting him, now Vice President Kamala Harris leapt to his defense in a tweet that is still active on her account.

Tomorrow, jury selection is set to begin in the trial against Smollett, nearly three years after the alleged hate crime hoax occurred.

The tweet by Harris is now again going viral, and in it, she called Smollett “one of the kindest, most gentle human beings” she knows.

As we previously reported:

One month later, it was reported that she “gave an awkward response” when asked about the tweet and his claims. “Which tweet, what tweet?” was her response. At that point, local media reports were swirling that the attack was staged.

Two days later, she met with Al Sharpton who said, “Whoever is wrong should pay the maximum. If Smollett is wrong, he ought to face accountability to the maximum,” as Chicago police finally confirmed the reports and they believed it was staged. Harris did not make any additional statement, according to the report.

Washington Examiner’s Jerry Dunleavy tweeted a screenshot of the tweet and said, “Jussie Smollett’s criminal trial for staging a hoax hate crime against himself and filing false police reports begins tomorrow, and I am reminded of this incredible tweet.”

The Chicago Sun-Times reported that the charges against Smollett carry a maximum sentence of three years, with a lighter sentence, even probation, the likely outcome if he is convicted, given his lack of a serious criminal background.

In October, we reported on the developments in the trial:

Former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett appears out of options now after a dismissal attempt was denied by Cook County Circuit Court Judge James Linn.

Linn noted that Smollett’s case now is being handled by a special prosecutor and that he won’t interfere as the trial is set for Nov. 29.

Smollett was first charged in 2019 with filing a false police report over an alleged staged attack, but that case, however, was dropped.

The case was revived when a special prosecutor charged Smollett, who has pleaded not guilty with disorderly conduct over the police reports.

In June 2020, two brothers, Abimbola and Olabinjo Osundairo, admitted that they helped Smollett stage a racist and homophobic attack against him that also slandered Trump supporters.

Smollett’s lawyer Nenye Uche argued that Smollett’s rights were being violated since he had already performed community service and given up a $10,000 bond in a previous deal with Cook County prosecutors to drop charges.

Uche insisted, “A deal is a deal. That’s ancient principle,” however, he also claimed that Smollett wants “nothing more than to go to a jury and clear his name.”
