Adam Schiff ‘Proud to Stand’ With Black Caucus Chairwoman Arrested at Senate Office Building Protest

We reported yesterday that U.S. House Rep and Black Caucus Chairwoman Joyce Beatty (D-OH) was arrested yesterday at a protest in the Hart Senate Office Building during a protest against voting integrity laws, which Democrats claim suppress voters.

U.S. House Rep Adam Schiff (D-CA), who is the Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee, was one of many who praised her efforts after hearing about the detention.

Schiff said in a tweet, “Nine voting rights activists arrested for peacefully demonstrating. For standing up for our democracy.”

“We’ve seen this before,” Schiff insisted and then claimed, “And we know how it ends: democracy WILL prevail.”

“Proud to stand in solidarity with @RepBeatty and all those fighting for our democracy,” Schiff added and Beatty retweeted his tweet.

According to the Washington Examiner, those arrested were brought up on charges related to D.C. Code §22-1307, a “crowding, obstructing, or incommoding,” a misdemeanor offense.

In another tweet that was retweeted by Beatty, U.S. House Rep Madeleine Dean (D-PA) also approved of her actions and called for an end to the filibuster and “voter suppression.”

“Everything is on the line if we can’t secure voting rights for all Americans. @RepBeatty, and organizers like @MsLaToshaBrown, are holding the line and we need the Senate to fall in line,” Dean explained.

Beatty released a statement and also appeared on “The Last Word” with Lawrence O’Donnell on MSNBC following her arrest.

In the statement, Beatty warned of future action and said, “I stand in solidarity with Black women and allies across the country in defense of our constitutional right to vote. We have come too far and fought too hard to see everything systematically dismantled and restricted by those who wish to silence us. Be assured that this is just the beginning. This is Our Power, Our Message.”

Beatty also declared in a tweet, “You can arrest me. You can’t stop me. You can’t silence me.”
