Dem House Rep and Black Caucus Chair Joyce Beatty Arrested on Capitol Grounds During Voting Rights Protest

U.S. House Rep Joyce Beatty (D-OH), who is the chair of the Congressional Black Caucus, was one of nine demonstrators arrested today during a voting rights protest on Capitol Grounds at the Hart Senate Office building.

In a statement to 10TV WBNS, Capitol Police said the arrests were made for “demonstrating in a prohibited area on Capitol Grounds.”

Officers responded to the atrium in the building for reports of illegal demonstration activity, according to 10TV WBNS.

Police added that, “After officers arrived on the scene, they warned the demonstrators three times to stop. Those who refused were arrested for D.C. Code §22-1307. Two males and seven females were transported to USCP Headquarters for processing.”

Beatty’s Twitter feed detailed the timeline of events. Earlier, she tweeted that she was “Joining an all-star group of civil rights champions, advocates, and allies in marching to the U.S. Senate to demand change.”

Beatty insisted, “The @SenateGOP shouldn’t be allowed to filibuster Americans’ voting rights!”

Not long thereafter, Beatty shared pictures of herself posing and walking with other demonstrators and said in the tweet, “Black women are demanding OUR right to vote! We’re marching to the Senate to send a strong message.”

After that, Beatty retweeted a tweet from NBC’s Haley Talbot, who shared a picture of the demonstrators locked arm in arm.

“Congresswoman ⁦@RepBeatty⁩ escorts a group of activists into Hart for a sit in on voting rights. We expect arrests to begin shortly,” Talbot reported.

Beatty then shared the same picture in a tweet and declared, “We will not be turned around. We will keep walking. We will fight for freedom. We will fight for our right to vote!”

Talbot shared another video in a tweet that was retweeted by Beatty which showed the demonstrators in the atrium chanting while police huddling nearby with zip ties and a megaphone.

In the tweet, Talbot reported, “Activists escorted into Hart by @RepBeatty chant ‘end the filibuster!'”

The next tweet by Beatty showed pictures of her being detained and stating in the tweet, “Let the people vote. Fight for justice.”

The most recent tweet by Beatty simply contained the hashtag “#GoodTrouble,” a phrase used by civil rights activists over the years.
