AOC’s Pal Cori Bush ‘Hurt’ After She Says Republicans Called Her ‘Breonna’ While Wearing ‘Breonna Taylor’ Mask

Cori Bush recently won a Congressional seat in the 99% urban St. Louis district of Missouri, which includes Ferguson, for which she describes herself as an activist. Bush is also a former National 2020 Surrogate for Bernie Sanders.

Today, Bush attended the Freshman orientation where she shared a picture and said that “Change does not come from this place unless we bring it here ourselves. We’re bringing change to the 117th Congress.”

Not long after that, Bush had apparently already ran into her first challenge on the hill. Bush said that “It’s Day One, so I’m wearing my ‘Breonna Taylor’ mask. A few of my Republican colleagues have called me Breonna, assuming that’s my name.”

“It hurts. But I’m glad they’ll come to know her name & story because of my presence here. Breonna must be central to our work in Congress,” Bush claimed.

That tweet was retweeted by New York House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez who recently gave Bush advice on her Congressional wardrobe following a tweet Bush made.

Bush wondered, “The reality of being a regular person going to Congress is that it’s really expensive to get the business clothes I need for the Hill. So I’m going thrift shopping tomorrow. Should I do a fashion show?”

AOC responded that suggesting “Thrifting, renting, and patience as you get your closet together sis. Capsule wardrobe will be your best friend.”

Cortez tagged Ayanna Pressley and said that she “has the accessory game down” and the “Good news is that all these practices are very sustainable and good for the planet!”

Breonna Taylor was killed by Kentucky police in March in a case that fueled nationwide protests. When the police officers weren’t charged, there were riots in Louisville and multiple officers were shot.

CBS News reported that Bush said she hopes to make “real change” and that she’s “The first Black congresswoman to represent” her state and she believes “that’s huge and that opens up the door for so many others.”

When asked about her tweet, Bush told reporters today that the comments from her colleagues were “disheartening” and “hurtful,” and claimed she was called “Breonna” several times.

“This has been national news for a long time. People have protested in the streets with this name and it just saddens me that people that want to be in leadership don’t know the struggles that are happening to Black people in this country,” Bush added.
