Donald Glover Takes Shots at Chevy Chase, Claiming He called Him the N-Word

During the Writers Guild Awards, actor and comedian Donald Glover presented executive producer Paul Simms with the Herb Sargent Award for Comedy Excellence.

While Glover was making his speech, he brought up left wing actor Chevy Chase, who he worked with on the set of “Community”. Glover remarked that the award was named for Herb Sargeant who did “Saturday Night Live” skit “Weekend Update” with Chase.

“Chevy Chase once called Herb one of the funniest writers working in television,” Glover started. “Chevy Chase once called me… You know what? This is about Paul.”

He then returned to the topic later in his speech while talking about when he met Simms on the set of “Girls”.

“I asked Lena, ‘Hey, what made you decide to work with Paul?’ And she goes ‘Honestly, this n****r lets me do whatever I want”

Glover then slams Chase, “And I remember thinking two things. One, Lena is using the N-word extremely liberally. Who does she think she is, Chevy Chase? And two that’s the kind of producer I want.”

In 2018, “Community” Creator Dan Harmon told “The New Yorker” Chase would try to disrupt Glover and “make racial cracks between takes.” Harmon alleges that Chase was just “jealous” of Glover’s talent.

“I remember apologizing to Donald after a particularly rough night of Chevy’s non-PC verbiage, and Donald said, ‘I don’t even worry about it,’” Harmon said.

In 2012 a source told “The Hollywood Reporter” Chase had “apologized immediately” after he used the N-word on set. They added that he slur was not aimed at Glover but used when Chase questioned dialogue in a scene wit their characters.

Currently there is a “Community the movie” project going ahead. Joel McHale, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Alison Brie, Jim rash and Ken Jeong are set to return to be a part of the film.

Glover, Chase and Yvette Brown and yet to sign on to the project.
