U.S. House Reps. Eric Swalwell (D-CA) and Adam Schiff (D-CA) lamented on CNN’s “State of the Union” to host Dana Bash over their removal from the House Intelligence Committee.
Bash starts on Swalwell about his ties to a Chinese spy, referred to as ‘Fang Fang’. Fang Fang “developed ties” to Swalwell and his campaign in 2012, raising funds for his campaign. The pair worked together until 2015 according to Swalwell when the FBI confronted him that she was a Chinese spy. He then cut off ties with her and cooperated with the FBI.
After the recap of the situation, she asks him if he made himself vulnerable to Fang Fang, that she may have learned American secrets or benefited in some way.
Swalwell retorts quickly, “Absolutely not.”
“But Dana, don’t take my word for it, take the FBI’s word for it,” he added to his defense.
Swalwell claims the FBI has only said that he “helped them” and that he was “never under any suspicion of wrongdoing.”
He claims counter to what McCarthy has said, that former Speaker of the House John Boehner (R) was briefed on what was going on and let him stay on the intel committee. He also pointed to former Chair of the intel committee Devin Nunes (R) as well as former Speaker Paul Ryan (R), all of whom did not remove him from the committee.
None of the people he listed are still in congress, and McCarthy has claimed none of them got the briefing he received.
He then claimed that former President Donald Trump would have weaponized that information if he could have.
“There’s nothing there, this is some Bakersfield B.S.” Swalwell claims. He then accuses McCarthy of weaponizing his ability to commit “political abuse”.
Earlier last week Kevin McCarthy pushed back on claims that the removal of Schiff and Swalwell was political vengeance. See his response below:
