First House Speaker Vote Concludes With No Speaker Elected as 19 GOP Reps Vote Against Kevin McCarthy

The first House Speaker vote today in the 118th Congress concluded with no Speaker elected as 19 GOP representatives voted against U.S. House Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

With the Democrats united against the Republicans, U.S. House Rep Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) received the most votes with 212.

According to reporter Jake Sherman, the vote count was, “Jeffries: 212 McCarthy: 203 Biggs: 10 Jordan: 6 Banks: 1 Zeldin: 1 Donalds: 1”

Election expert Dave Wasserman listed the 19 Republicans who voted against McCarthy: Andy Biggs, Dan Bishop, Lauren Boebert, Josh Brecheen, Mike Cloud, Andrew Clyde, Eli Crane, Matt Gaetz, Bob Good, Paul Gosar, Andy Harris, Anna Paulina Luna, Mary Miller, Ralph Norman, Andy Ogles, Scott Perry, Matt Rosendale, Chip Roy, and Keith Self.

As we previously reported, U.S. House Rep Lauren Boebert (R-CO) today pledged that she would not support Kevin McCarthy for House Speaker “as it stands.” Boebert ultimately voted for Jordan.

Boebert declared in a tweet, “As it stands, I will not be voting for Kevin McCarthy to be Speaker of the House.”

In a video clip that was shared by Boebert in the tweet, she said, “So now, here we are, being sworn at instead of sworn in and we could have had this solved months ago.”

It was reported that in a House conference meeting this morning, McCarthy insisted that he had earned the “Godd*mn” job of Speaker. Boebert’s words certainly back up that report.

“I have been working every day to unify the Republican party for the American people and yesterday we had a deal that was not a selfish deal in any way for Kevin McCarthy to give him the gavel on the first ballot and he eagerly dismissed us,” Boebert explained in the clip.

U.S. House Reps Bob Good (R-VA) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) were among other vocal dissenters prior to the vote. Both voted for U.S. House Rep Andy Biggs (R-AZ)
