Matt Gaetz Nominates Jim Jordan to be House Speaker Prior to the Second Round of Voting

U.S. House Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) nominated U.S. House Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH) to be House Speaker prior to the second round of voting.

The nomination came as Jordan nominated U.S. House Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to become the next Speaker.

McCarthy was unable to secure enough votes in the first vote as 19 GOP representatives voted against him.

Gaetz said that the speech that Jordan gave to nominate McCarthy sounded like a speech that a Speaker would make.

Additionally, Gaetz said that perhaps the Speaker should be someone who isn’t pursuing the position as well.

After McCarthy was announced as the nominee there was a large ovation, while the nomination of Jordan was not as well received.

The Democrats once again nominated U.S. House Rep Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) and it was pointed out that he had received the most votes in the first round.

It was the first time since 1923 that a Speaker wasn’t selected in the first round and in that Congress, it took 9 rounds to select the Speaker.

U.S. House Rep Bob Good (R-VA) said he would support Jordan in a tweet where he said, “We need a courageous, conservative warrior who will humbly answer the call of duty for his country. I will be voting for Jim Jordan on the 2nd ballot!”

Four Republicans have already voted for Jordan as Speaker in the second round.
