Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio Cortez (D-NY) took to Twitter to celebrate the release of the committee assignments which included multiple progressives like herself, Rashida Talib (D-MI), and Cori Bush (D-MO) on the Oversight and Reform Committee, which is mainly and investigative committee.

Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was recently re-elected as Speaker of the House with the help of Progressives like AOC supporting her bid by a slim margin. Progressives rallied around Pelosi as Speaker of the House which allowed her to maintain Speakership by a slim majority of votes.
216 Democrats voted for Pelosi, 209 Republicans voted for Kevin McCarthy (R-CA), two Democrats voted for other people, and three Democrats voted present. This comes as the GOP gained multiple seats in the House and tightened the Democratic majority after unseating centrist Democrats in Trump districts, thus giving more power to progressives within the Democratic Party.
It is unclear why the Progressives rallied around Pelosi as Speaker of the House as they have had disagreements before. However, after seeing the new list of the progressives who will be serving on the Oversight and Reform Committee some hold a possible but unproven theory.
Progressives like AOC, Cori Bush (D-M)), Katie Porter (D-CA), and Rashia Talib (D-MI) were just some of the progressives who will be serving on the Oversight and Reform Committee in the 117th Congress. It is important to note all of these progressives were on the committee last Congress except for Freshmen Rep. Cori Bush (D-MO) who was just elected in November.
However, Pelosi could have changed who is on which committee but left progressives on it and added Bush to the committee. Although unproven, you could speculate the progressive members of the party cut a deal with Pelosi to keep her as Speaker as long as she adds progressives to the Oversight and Reform Committee. This could just be one part of the so-called “deal” with the progressives and Pelosi that some have floated.
Progressives will certainly have more of a grip on Congress and the Democratic Majority in the House. We will have to see if anything else follows this.
