Georgia House Republicans Introduced a Bill That Requires Voting ID for Absentee Ballots and Tightens Voting Laws

House Republicans in Georgia have introduced a bill into the Georgia State Legislature which would ban early voting, on Sundays prior to an election, across the state and multiple other measures concerning election integrity. Below is the tweet.

Many on the left have called this “voter suppression” by the Georgia House Republicans as it would limit the black vote and potentially slash the turnout of Black churchgoers in the state who overwhelmingly vote Democrat.

This bill follows as a surge in African American’s requesting absentee ballots in the state of Georgia which put two Democrats over the top in the runoff elections this past January.

The Star Tribune describes this legislation (Bill 531) saying it would, “require a photo ID for absentee voting, limit the time when an absentee ballot could be requested, restrict where ballot drop boxes could be placed, ban counties from holding early voting on Sundays and restrict the use of mobile voting units, among many other changes.”

This bill comes as Georgia State Senate Sub-Committees passed four different pieces of election integrity legislation that would tighten the voting laws earlier this week.

We will have to see if this bill passes in the GOP-controlled Georgia State House and if passed, signed by the governor who is up for re-election in 2022.
