Heartless Thug Steals From Air Force Veteran’s Wallet and Leaves Him for Dead on Richmond Bus

Disturbing video shows a passenger stealing from an Air Force veteran who suffered a heart attack on his way to a doctors appointment aboard a Richmond, Virginia bus during the final moments of his life.

20-year-old Damontea Chappell pretended to help 66-year-old Ray Bass, but after family members questioned why their loved one’s wallet was empty, officials with Greater Richmond Transit Company (GRTC) went to the recordings and alerted police.

GRTC officials said that while the bus driver was following emergency procedures and evacuating everyone off the bus., Chappell lied and said he was assisting Bass so he wouldn’t be alone, however those recordings showed otherwise.

In the video, Chappell can be heard saying aloud to the unconscious military veteran, “Pops, what yo name is pops?”, “I’m trying to find your wallet”, and “Where is your wallet?” Chappell is eventually seen finding Bass’ wallet and grabbing a wad of cash, leaving him there to die.

Richmond Detective Greg Russell said Chappell took anywhere from $200-$400 from Bass’ wallet and that he’s “been a police officer for 30 years” and has “never seen anything like this.”

Russell said of the robbery, “This might take the cake. This is a vile incident that should not have happened. This man deserved respect and was totally disrespected.”

“He was acting as though he was a good Samaritan. When all the while he was a wolf in sheep’s clothing,” Russell added. He told 8News that Chappell stayed on scene after stealing from Bass, even sharing with officers that he was “terrified” and “had never seen anyone die”, but never confessed to swiping the man’s money.

A warrant was issued for Chappell’s arrest and an official from the Richmond Police Department said the suspect turned himself into police and is being held without bond.
