On Friday Mereck Garland named Jack Smith to lead a special counsel investigation into whether or not, charges should be brought against former President Trump. Johnathan Turley shared what he thought of the new witch hunt on Fox New’s America Report.
Turley believes that Smith is a “solid appointment”. Turley pointed to the few times Garland mentioned obstruction of justice. He seems to think that is where the investigation will focus. The scope of the investigation will cover January 6th, the 2020 election as well as the raid on Trump’s Mar-a-Lago home.
Turley doesn’t see a strong basis for charges against Donald Trump linked to January 6th. Turley seems to hint that they will focus more on Mar-a-Lago and try assets for obstruction charges.
Turley also shared they will be looking for election interference as something the special counsel will likely look for. John Roberts points out that charges could be brought against members of Congress which could change the power structure in the House potentially.
Shannon Bream and Gerry Baker were also asked to give their opinions on the newly announced special counsel. The full segment can be seen below:
Donald Trump Truthed his thoughts on the new announcement:
“Here we go again! I thought that the Unselect Committee on January 6th was a dead issue, especially with the record setting loss off Liz Chaney in the Great State of Wyoming, and likewise felt that the document hoax case, after reviewing the Clinton Socks Case & the Presidential Record Act, was dead, or at least dying fast. The Democrat Department of “Justice” had nothing, except Trump haters, so they just appointed a Special Prosecutor to go after me further. Disgraceful!”
This feels to many like another witch hunt, in the long cycle of witch hunts set to “get Trump”. The push is for the Special Counsel to be concluded with its investigation before the 2024 election which is less than two years away.
