U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) sent a letter to FBI Director Christopher Wray and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas calling on them to open a federal hate crime investigation into the shooting at The Covenant School, a Christian elementary school in Nashville TN.
Hawley targeted the statute which states causing bodily injury to a person based on their religion is a hate crime.
Hawley closed the letter, “The full resources of the federal government must be brought to bear to determine how this crime occurred, and who may have influenced the deranged shooter to carry out these horrific crimes. Hate that leads to violence must be condemned. And hate crimes must be prosecuted.”
Hawley delivered a speech on the Senate floor addressing the hate crime that took place in Nashville. He called on all members of the Senate to condemn the Nashville shooting as a hate crime. He announced he was introducing a resolution to designate the shooting as the hate crime “that it is”. He also called on his fellow Senators to “condemn hateful rhetoric that leads to violence.”
Hawley then went after corporate America calling on “corporate partners” to make their voices heard condemning this violence against Christians asking them to stand with this community.
See Hawley’s full speech below:
Monday, Audrey Hale of Nashville, Tennesee forced her way into The Covenant School by gunfire and took the lives of three students and three staff members before she was taken out by Nashville police.
News has been released that Hale was being treated for an emotional disorder, she also was identifying as a male.
Hale’s parents knew she had previously owned guns but thought she had gotten rid of the guns they knew about. unbeknownst to them Hale had hidden the guns from her parents.
A manifesto and other writings were found that laid out her plans for the attack. Hale had even detailed the clothing she was planning to wear.
Police have shared that the school was targeted, mapped, and surveilled.
We will see if the FBI or Homeland Security moves to investigate the shooting as a hate crime.
Earlier we reported that Trey Gowdy called for red flag gun confiscation laws but did not mention targeted hate crime as a possibility.
