Kevin McCarthy Dramatically Falls Short Again by One Vote, Despite Fox News ‘Source’ Claiming He had the Votes

Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) failed to make it across the finish line for Speaker of the House in the 14th vote held Friday night.

The vote came in 216 for McCarthy and 212 for Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY), 4 voted for others and two voted present. He embarrassingly was missing only one vote. After the vote was taken the House paused in an effort to try to get those who voted against or voted present to change their vote for McCarthy. They were unable to get anyone to budge.

Friday night the House convened at 10 pm EST to hold the 14th vote for Speaker of the House. The vote started with rumors that Kevin McCarthy had the votes to take the speakership.

Matt Gaetz (R-FL) did not vote when his name was initially called. When his name was called again at the end Gaetz voted present.

Lauren Boebert (R-CO) who was a holdout and had voted against McCarthy in the last 13 votes, voted present for this round.

Bob Good(R-VA) and Andy Biggs (R-AZ) voted for Jim Jordan (R-OH). Matt Rosendale (R-MT) and Eli Crane (R-AZ) voted for Andy Biggs.

At this time it is unclear if they will hold another vote this evening or adjourn to a later date.
