Kinzinger Calls Prosecution ‘Compelling’ and Claims He ‘Cannot Imagine How Any Senator Could Vote Against Removal’

Anti-Trump U.S. House Rep Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) announced the launch of the Country First PAC late last month and it was reported today that he plans to take aim at Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) and Matt Gaetz (R-FL) in the 2022 elections.

During a Washington Post live event today, Kinzinger said, “I mean, look, all you have to do is see people like, of course, Marjorie Taylor Greene. You look at people like Matt Gaetz, who know better. I think neither of them believes the stuff they ascribe to, they just want fame.”

Kinzinger explained, “So then you have to look at all that stuff and say, OK, can they be defeated? Who are opponents that can actually run against them?”

In a tweet, Kinzinger took aim at the former president and his trial in the Senate. Kinzinger insisted, “The prosecution is compelling. Donald Trump incited and directed the insurrection. He knew what he was doing. I cannot imagine how any Senator could vote against removal.”

In another tweet, Kinzinger targeted U.S. Senator Josh Hawley (R-MO) and shared an article that was critical of Republican senators for “appearing to pay half-hearted attention” to an impeachment trial that most already voted was unconstitutional.

“Would be nice if Josh Hawley would actually put his Presidential ambitions (which will fail) aside for a moment to actually be a grown up Senator, come to terms with what he did, and seek redemption,” Kinzinger complained.

Kinzinger may be facing a stiff challenge for his seat from Diante Johnson, an organizer with Black Voices for Trump last year and a field organizer with Trump’s 2016 campaign.

Johnson has remained firm in his support of Trump, even after Jan. 6. Prior to the former president’s last day in office, Johnson tweeted, “It’s truly been the opportunity of a lifetime… Thank you President Trump for putting America First.”

“Over the past four years, so much was accomplished! Job well done Mr. President. May God bless continue to bless President Trump and his family. It’s been an honor sir,” Johnson added.

In a tweet at the beginning of the month in response to a Kinzinger reference from Trump’s former 2016 campaign spokesperson Katrina Pierson, Johnson said, “Looks like it’s time a certain person to move back to Illinois and run against him. What say you?”
