Second Round of Voting For House Speaker Concludes With No Speaker Elected as Kevin McCarthy Receives the Same Number of Votes as the First Round

The second round of voting for House Speaker has concluded with no Speaker elected as U.S. House Rep Kevin McCarthy received the same number of votes as the first round.

In the second round, however, U.S. House Rep Jim Jordan (R-OH) received the other 19 votes that were cast by GOP reps against McCarthy.

U.S. House Rep Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) once again received all 212 votes from the Democrat House Reps, who remain united around him.

As we previously reported, U.S. House Rep Matt Gaetz (R-FL) nominated Jordan to be House Speaker prior to the second round of voting.

The nomination came after Jordan nominated U.S. House Rep Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) to become the next Speaker.

ACT For America’s Brigitte Gabriel summed up the situation as she said in a tweet, “Kevin McCarthy is now 0-2. It’s time for McCarthy to be an adult about this and remove his name from the list.”

U.S. House Rep Chip Roy (R-TX) who has voted against McCarthy spoke with Fox News during the second round of voting and explained why he was voting against him.

Roy said that they didn’t have any way to enforce the rule changes that McCarthy agreed to prior to the votes.

“He’s been in the leadership of Republicans since 2009… we want to be able to have a check against the swamp,” Roy explained.
