Last night, Iowans caucused to select who their delegates will vote for at the Democratic National Convention primary. The results were not released last night, but Mayor Pete Buttigieg declared his campaign as the winner of the Iowa Caucus. He said, “So we don’t know all the results, but we know by the time it’s all said and done: Iowa, you have shocked the nation. Because by all indications, we are going on to New Hampshire victorious.”
CNN journalist DJ Rudd questioned Buttigieg this morning at a campaign stop in New Hampshire if it was premature to declare a victory in Iowa last night. He declined to respond. View the video below:
The Iowa Democratic Party Chair Troy Price released a statement on Tuesday saying, “Last night, more than 1,600 precinct caucuses gathered across the state of Iowa and at satellite caucuses around the world to demonstrate our shared values and goal of taking back the White House … We have every indication that our systems were secure and there was not a cyber security intrusion. In preparation for the caucuses, our systems were tested by independent cybersecurity consultants.”
Additionally, “As precinct caucus results started coming in, the IDP ran them through an accuracy and quality check. It became clear that there were inconsistencies with the reports. The underlying cause of these inconsistencies was not immediately clear, and required investigation, which took time…
As part of our investigation, we determined with certainty that the underlying data collected via the app was sound. While the app was recording data accurately, it was reporting out only partial data. We have determined that this was due to a coding issue in the reporting system. This issue was identified and fixed. The application’s reporting issue did not impact the ability of precinct chairs to report data accurately…
While our plan is to release results as soon as possible today, our ultimate goal is to ensure that the integrity and accuracy of the process continues to be upheld.” View the entire statement here.
According to The Independent, “The app, reportedly designed by Democratic tech firm Shadow, headed by a former Hillary Clinton campaign staffer, was enlisted by the DNC late last year. It also is scheduled to record and report results in Nevada’s Democratic caucus on 22 February.”
CNN’s John King also reported today that the Biden campaign may seek a court injunction to halt the release of the Iowa Caucus results because of the issues with the vote counts.
Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released a statement in regard to the Iowa Caucuses, which says, “The same Democrats who want to take over everyone’s healthcare and plan the entire economy couldn’t even organize the traditional Iowa caucuses.” Read the entire statement below:
