New D.C. Police Chief Issues Warning to Rep. Boebert About Carrying Her Firearm in City

After an newly-elected House Rep. Lauren Boebert (R-CO) released an ad yesterday showing her walking the streets of Washington D.C. while appearing to be concealed carrying, the newly-appointed police chief Robert Contee III had a warning for the Congresswoman.

When asked during a press conference about the Colorado lawmaker’s plan to carry a gun to the Capitol, Contee said he wants to ensure that “she is aware of the what the laws of the District of Columbia are.”

“That Congresswoman will be subjected to the same penalties as anyone else that’s caught on the D.C. streets carrying a firearm,” Contee added.

D.C. Mayor Muriel bowser held a ceremony Saturday, swearing-in Contee, who was sworn in to replace Peter Newsham as acting chief.

Boebert tweeted out her new ad yesterday and said, “Let me tell you why I WILL carry my Glock to Congress. Government does NOT get to tell me or my constituents how we are allowed to keep our families safe. I promise to always stand strong for our 2nd Amendment rights.”

Fox News reported that the advertisement came after Boebert wrote a letter to House leadership Friday, urging them to keep a 1967 rule that exempts lawmakers from a ban on firearms inside the Capitol building.

The letter, which was signed by 82 other current and incoming GOP Congress members, came three days after 21 Democratic Reps. asked House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy to change the 53-year-old rule to keep Boebert from carrying her gun into work.

New rules unveiled by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi did not appear to include a proposed ban on firearms in the Capitol, which appeared to give Boebert a victory, for now.
