Tuesday night, after it was clear there was no path to the runoff for Lori Lightfoot, she gave her concession speech.
Lightfoot shared that she would do her best in her final months and added she had called Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson to congratulate them on moving forward. She then said she will be “rooting and praying for our next mayor to deliver for the people of the city for years to come”.
Lightfoot lead the city of Chicago during the pandemic. She pushed hard for her constituents to get vaccinated in what some saw as a very divisive way. Lightfoot pushed back on much of the bad publicity she received, blaming much of it on alleged racism, sexism, and general bigotry.
She also used race and sexism in the way she was portrayed during her re-election campaign. The soon to be former mayor claimed that Time Magazine didn’t give her the same treatment as former Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who was put on the cover of the Magazine.
She said of her critics that they just didn’t want a “Black woman” in leadership.
Violence has only seemed to spiral out of control while Lightfoot has been in control of the city. She put into place a policy that police officers couldn’t chase suspects. She was also on board with the “Defund the Police” narrative to a degree.
At one point during her time as mayor, Lightfoot informed the press that she would only do interviews with “people of color”. It appeared to many that Lightfoot may be one of the most divisive mayors in history.
When she was voted in, Lightfoot made history as the first openly gay Black woman who was voted in as mayor.
Her approach didn’t work well for her, as she comes the first mayor in 40 years to fail to win re-election.
Now the city of Chicago will decide who leads them on April 4th in a runoff between Paul Vallas and Brandon Johnson.
