Pro-Trump, Make America Great Again Inc. filed a 15-page ethics complaint in Florida, against Governor Ron DeSantis, alleging that he is running a “shadow presidential campaign.”
Head of MAGA Inc., Taylor Budowich sent a letter to Florida Commission on Ethics Glenton Gilzean, whom DeSantis appointed, alleging there is probable cause to investigate if DeSantis has violated Florida law. The claim is that DeSantis violated the law by fundraising through his Friends of Ron DeSantis PAC.
DeSantis has not yet officially declared his intent to run for President of the United States. It is alleged that DeSantis’s team is interviewing political operatives in early primary states. Currently, DeSantis is on a “personally lucrative book tour”, which is taking him through many early primary states including Iowa and Nevada.
“Governor DeSantis’ failure to declare his candidacy is no mere oversight; it is a coordinate effort specifically designed for him to accept, as unethical gifts, illegal campaign contributions and certain personal benefits that are necessarily intended to influence his official decision to resign from office under Florida’s resign to run law,” Budowich wrote. “Governor DeSantis’s ham-handed maneuverings have rendered him irreparably conflicted and have left the statehouse vacant.
DeSantis’s communication director responded, “Adding this to the list of frivolous and politically motivated attacks — it’s inappropriate to use state ethics for partisan purposes”
The draft complaint, obtained by NBC News reads, “This letter provides ample evidence to support a finding of probable cause by the Florida Commission on Ethics that Governor DeSantis, in concert with certain associated political committees, political consultants and a 501(c)(4) organization, has solicited and received millions of dollars’ worth of illegal gifts in violation of Florida State ethics laws and the Florida Constitution.”
DeSantis has indicated that he will be announcing his decision to run or not after the Florida legislature has concluded its session. Only time can tell if the letter will prompt an investigation or if it will fall by the wayside.
