Ron DeSantis Unloads on Biden, Demands That He ‘Unleash American Energy Today!’

Florida GOP Gov. Ron DeSantis unloaded on Joe Biden today in a tweet, demanding that he “Unleash American energy today!”

DeSantis began by pointing out that “After begging for oil from dictators, Biden is now using emergency war powers to produce batteries for the 1% that drive electric cars.”

“Most Americans suffering due to high gas prices don’t have the luxury of spending $50k+ on an electric car,” DeSantis explained.

DeSantis then sent Biden a direct message as he declared, “Unleash American energy today!”

The message from DeSantis comes after a report in The Intercept that the Biden Administration is drafting an executive order invoking the Defense Production Act to alleviate shortages of key minerals needed for the technology to store clean energy.

If enacted, it would bolster the manufacturing capacity of electric vehicle producers in particular and indicate that the administration is open to using executive power to achieve progressive policy goals as Congress remains reluctant to pass key parts of his green energy agenda.

It was also reported that several senators sent President Joe Biden a letter on Wednesday asking him to use authorities such as those contained in the Defense Production Act.

Democratic U.S. Sens. Ed Markey and Elizabeth Warren (MA), Martin Heinrich (NM), Cory Booker (NJ), and Jeff Merkley (OR) all signed the letter calling for the action to be taken in “support and increase manufacturing capacity and supply chain security for technologies that reduce fossil fuel demand and fuel costs, such as electric heat pumps, efficient electric appliances, renewable energy generation and storage, and other clean technologies.”

It’s the latest example of progressives in Congress urging the president to use his considerable authority to achieve policy victories. In a release earlier this month, the Congressional Progressive Caucus outlined a substantial agenda that could be achieved with the swipe of Biden’s pen, The Intercept noted.
