Russia Denies Claim by Ukraine that Invasion has Caused Increased Radiation Levels at Chernobyl and ‘Exceeded’ Normal Levels

Following Russian President Vladimir Putin’s invasion of Ukraine, Russia was able to take control of Chernobyl, a decommissioned nuclear power plant in Ukraine.

“Ukraine on Friday said radiation at the abandoned Chernobyl nuclear power plant has “exceeded” normal levels, the day after Russia invaded the nation and seized the plant.”

Since the beginning of the invasion, Russia has quickly moved through Ukraine as they approach the capital of Kyiv. Now, there are reports that the radiation levels at the Chernobyl plant have “exceeded” normal levels following the recent Russian occupation.

“The readings reported by the regulator – of up to 9.46 microSieverts per hour – are low and remain within the operational range measured in the Exclusion Zone since it was established,” The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) said.

The State Nuclear Regulatory Inspectorate of Ukraine released a statement saying, “As previously reported, the control levels of gamma radiation dose rate in the Exclusion zone were exceeded. Experts of the Ecocenter connect this with disturbance of the top layer of soil from movement of a large number of radio heavy military machinery through the Exclusion zone and increase of air pollution. The condition of Chernobyl nuclear facilities and other facilities is unchanged.”

There are also “credible” reports, according to the White House, that Russian troops are holding Chernobyl staff hostage. If radiation levels are too high, this could make the situation deadly and a possible repeat of the 1986 “Chernobyl disaster” where around 50 people died in the then-Soviet Union. However, Russia has denied these reports of “exceeding” radiation levels. Staff are there to monitor the decommissioned plant since the explosion in the 80s however Russia’s troop presence may interfere with that. Hopefully reported possible peace talks can prevent any potential issues here though.
