Suspect Who Allegedly Drove Through Waukesha Christmas Parade, Killing 6 and Injuring 60 Pleads Not Guilty to all Charges

Darrell Brooks Jr. has pleaded not guilty to all charges standing against him related to the tragedy at the Waukesha, WI Christmas parade in November of 2021. Brooks allegedly drove a car through the Christmas parade after having a fight with his ex-girlfriend, leaving behind the carnage of 60 injured and 6 dead.

Brooks’ attorneys Jeremy Perri and Anna Kees entered the not guilty plea on behalf of the defendant at his arraignment on Friday. His defense filed a change of venue motion on Thursday due to the extensive local publicity the case has received and a large number of people in the community that have been affected by the alleged crime.

Brooks faces 77 Charges including 6 charges of intentional homicide.  The alleged incident took place on November 21st. Police received a report of an altercation at a park near the parade route which was later revealed to be Brooks and his ex-girlfriend.

It appears that Brooks left the incident with his ex-girlfriend and drove through a barricade meant to block vehicles from entering the parade route in his red Ford Escape. Brooks allegedly drove through the parade mowing down men women and children. At one point the red Ford appears to stop and then it suddenly accelerates through a mass of people in the parade.

Officer Casey who was at the parade, testified last month in the probable cause hearing. Casey testified that at one point a person landed on the hood for the Ford which caused Brooks to slam on his brakes, launching the person from the hood of the vehicle. Casey also testified that Brooks then ran over the victim and he continued to drive through the parade.

This was not the first time Brooks allegedly ran over people. Only a few days before the incident Brooks had been released on $1,000 bail for allegedly running over his ex-girlfriend and leaving tire marks on her leg.

Brooks has quite the rap sheet and was also out on a $500 bail for allegedly opening fire on his nephew in 2020.

The six people who succumbed to their injuries from the massacre were 8-year-old Jackson Sparks, Virginia Sorenson, 79, LeAnna Owen, 71, Tamara Durand, 52, Jane Kulich, 52, and Wilhelm Hospel, 81, all of whom were White.

Brooks’ next court date is set for March 11th before Judge Jennifer Dorow. It remains to be seen if the defense’s request will be fulfilled or if Brooks will have to stand trial in the community where the tragedy took place.
