Trump Favorite Doug Collins Presumed to be Running for US Senate Against ‘RINO’ Incumbent Kelly Loeffler

Rep. Doug Collins (R-GA) is rumored to be gathering his staff for a Senate run. Recently Sen. Johnny Isakson resigned at the end of last year because of health concerns. Governor Brian Kemp placed Kelly Loeffler in the seat against the recommendations of President Trump who had called for Collins to be placed in the seat.

Loeffler is the co-owner of the Atlanta Dream a WNBA team based in Atlanta. According to OpensSecrets Loeffler and her husband, founder and CEO of ICE, have made 3.2 million in political donations. When Romney ran in 2012 Loeffler donated 750,000 to the Super PAC Restore Our Future, which supported Mitt Romeny’s 2012 election campaign. In total Loeffler and her husband have donated 247,500 to the National Republican Senatorial Committee, which will back Loeffler in 2020 according to Atlanta Journal Constitution.

Republicans hope that Loeffler will draw suburban women back to the party. Politico reported ” Loeffler faces the challenging task of proving herself as a sufficiently conservative ally of President Donald Trump — a distraction for a candidate Republicans hope can win back some of the suburban voters who have fled the GOP in the Trump era. ” There has been pushback from anti-abortion groups at Kemp’s choice to nominate Loeffler as she has made donations to an area hospital that performs elective abortions according to OpenSecrets.

Amy Kremer co-founder, of Women for Trump PAC, took to Twitter to share her thoughts on Kemp’s choice for the Senate. See tweet below:

Atlanta Journal Constitution reported;

U.S. Rep. Doug Collins will soon announce a challenge to U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, setting up a bitter Republican showdown in November that pits one of President Donald Trump’s most vocal defenders against a wealthy former executive backed by Gov. Brian Kemp.

Collins, who is set to be at the Georgia Statehouse on Tuesday, has started to line up campaign staff and call politicians and supporters to inform them of his decision to enter the race, according to several people who received the calls but requested anonymity to discuss private conversations.

The four-term congressman hopes to launch his campaign with support from Trump’s inner circle, if not the president himself. Trump privately lobbied Kemp on at least three separate occasions to tap Collins to fill the coveted seat, though he’s stayed publicly neutral since Loeffler was sworn into office.”

A bill passed House subcommittee Monday that would eliminate the ‘jungle primary’. according to the Augusta Chronicle; “The legislation would do away with the so-called “jungle primary” U.S. Sen. Kelly Loeffler, R-Ga., otherwise would face in a November special election to retain the seat held by former Sen. Johnny Isakson. Kemp appointed the Atlanta businesswoman to the Senate last month when Isakson retired due to health problems.

Unless the law is changed, Loeffler and every other candidate wishing to run for the Senate seat – Republicans and Democrats – would face off on the same ballot in November. If no candidate in the likely crowded field receives more than 50% of the vote, a runoff would be held early next January.”
