Utah Governor Spencer Cox (R) has signed H.B. 27 today, which will require porn filters on cellphones and tablets. This bill would seek to limit the number of people who are consuming porn and effectively ban it from being consumed by those who are underage.

This bill passed the Utah Senate by a vote of 19-6 and was passed in the House as well. Tuesday, Governor Cox signed the bill however there is a catch to the bill. Five other states would have to pass the same measures in order for this to be put into effect. It is important that other states pass this measure in order for this bill to have an actual effect.
This bill is highly popular among people in Utah as there are many religious Mormons in the state. Cox carefully considered this bill before signing it as a spokesperson for Cox said he would, “carefully consider this bill during the signing period.”
The bill signed states, “This bill establishes filter requirements and enforcement mechanisms for tablets and smartphones activated in the state on or after January 1 of the year following the year this bill takes effect”.
Utah has had a long history of fighting pornography as former Utah Governor Gary Herbert (R) wanted to use $50,000 dollars in taxpayer money for anti-pornography efforts. The money was proposed to go to the Utah Coalition Against Pornography.
We will have to see if other states follow suit in order for this legislation to come into effect.
