After Previously Marching With BLM, Mitt Romney Criticizes Clarence Thomas: ‘He’s Opened a Lot of Doors That No Other Justices Walk Through’

After 47 GOP House members voted for the so-called Respect for Marriage Act, U.S. Senator Mitt Romney (R-UT) took a cheap shot at Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas over his opinion last month where he suggested that it could be time to overturn the 2015 same-sex marriage ruling, Obergefell v. Hodges.

Romney, who previously marched with Black Lives Matter supporters, told a Business Insider reporter that “He’s opened a lot of doors that no other justices walk through.”

When asked about the fact that all four Utah House Republicans voted for the bill, Romney said, “They obviously reviewed it and felt that it was the right thing to do.”

Insider pointed out that Thomas, in response to the Supreme Court’s June 24 decision overturning Roe v. Wade, wrote a concurring opinion that called for the court to “reconsider” other rulings, such as same-sex marriage, that involve privacy rights under the 14th Amendment.

Thomas wrote in reference to rulings concerning contraception access, same-sex relationships, and same-sex marriage, “For that reason, in future cases, we should reconsider all of this Court’s substantive due process precedents, including Griswold, Lawrence, and Obergefell.”

Romney said he hasn’t given thought to the bill yet, however, because no action has been taken yet by the Supreme Court to overturn the ruling.

“We all know what the law is. I haven’t given consideration to that legislation, in part because the law isn’t changing and there’s no indication that it will,” Romney told reporters according to Insider.

Romney added that “Clearly, the legislation from the House is unnecessary, given the fact that the law is the same, and we’ll take a look at it as it comes our way.”

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), however, said on Wednesday he wants to put the legislation on the floor and has tasked Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-WI), the first openly gay Senator, with finding Republican support.
