Alabama Senate Passes Bill Which Would Ban Those Under 19 From Being Treated With Puberty Blockers, Hormone Therapy, or Surgery

The Alabama State Senate voted 24-4 Tuesday to pass SB10 the Vulnerable Child Compassion and Protection Act which would ban hormone therapy and surgery for trans youth and make it a class c felony.

In the decisive vote this bill, which was sponsored by Republican Senator Shay Shelnutt, would make sure those under the age of 19 could not be treated with puberty blockers, hormone therapy, or surgery.

If a medical professional were to break this law, under the bill they could go to prison for up to 10 years or face a $15,000 fine. Senator Shelnutt commented on the bill and defended it saying, “Children aren’t mature enough to make these decisions on surgeries and drugs.”He also cited wanting to “protect kids” as another reason for this bill.

Alabama is also considering passing another bill that would ban transgender people from competing in sports, not of their biological gender. This has been a debating point between the left and the right since the passing of the “Equality Act” in the House last week.

With the Republicans having a 27-7 majority in the Alabama Senate, a 76-28 majority in the Alabama House, and a Republican Governor, there doesn’t seem to be anything stopping these bills from passing.

We will have to see if this bill does pass which is likely and will cause outrage from the Democrats.
