Anchorage Alaska Mayoral Seat Flips from Blue to Red After Republican Dave Bronson Wins

In a narrow race for Mayor in Anchorage, Alaska, Dave Bronson edged out his Democratic opponent, Forrest Dunbar, by a mere 1,200 votes.

Tim Swain tweeted, “IT’S OFFICIAL The Anchorage Mayoral seat has flippedDave Bronson (R) beat Forrest Dunbar (D) by 1,193 votes. That is a 17 point swing from 2018.” We were unable to verify the 17 point swing Swain tweets about.

At his first press conference as mayor-elect on Monday, Bronson laid out his platform that his administration plans to take on. The priorities for his administration are economic recovery, public safety, and government efficiencies. Bronson plans to implement a hiring freeze to help shrink the size of the government in Anchorage. His transition team is closely reviewing all city departments and employees, as well as analyzing the city budget to find any “inefficiencies“.

This election held the subjects of pandemic restrictions and homelessness as central issues. Bronson’s opponent conceded the race on Friday, posting on Facebook saying, “It is clear that Dave Bronson will be Anchorage’s next mayor”.

This runoff election was highly promoted and voter turnout was record high, reaching 38.3%. As long as two weeks ago, Deputy municipal clerk, Erika McConnell said that the current election turnout was unlike any election in the history of Anchorage: “We’re definitely going to break a vote-by-mail record. I haven’t looked back at the history of elections in Anchorage since 1975, since unification, but it’s gonna be up there.” This Conservative swing in Alaska could be a good sign for the GOP and other Conservatives in the 2022 election cycle.
