Entitled UGA Staff and Students Stage ‘Die in’ to Protest Going Back to School

Classes at the University of Georgia are set to start Monday. Around 50 faculty, students and family members held a ‘Die in’ In protest. According to the AJC the group is demanding more “COVID-19 testing and allowing any faculty members to teach remotely if they desire.” A letter was sent to the Board of Regents and an attempt was made to present the letter to the UGA president Jere Morehead. The protest was organized by UGA graduate students.

Many students are ready to get back to school missing the social interaction and in person classes. Twitter user @GRANTSRNTS called the group a “Bunch of big babies” in the tweet below:

The same sentiment was shared from @jessemullins and @JordanSchachtel. Schachtel’s tweet says “Putting aside the fact that their risk level from COVID-19 is pretty much zero… You don’t in fact have to go to college. And if you don’t like one school, there are like 10,000 other places in America where you can take classes online.” Mullins retweeted Satchel and added “This “die-in” is just ridiculous. Another event for people with time on their hands, and daddy’s money.” Much of the same seen on Twitter calling the group out for what many have deemed as petty waste of time.

The risk of death or serious issues from COVID-19 is less, the younger you are. The average age of a college graduate student is 32.5 according council of graduate schools, which still places them in a lower risk group. This is the opinion of the writer and not to be construed as medical advise or life advise.

UNC-Chapel Hill also had a Die-in protesting the opening of their campus as well. They sent a letter to the leadership of their school as well. The modern college student seems to want to have a bubble to live in calling for safe spaces and wanting to do school virtually, while the risks to them are not that sever.
