Former Myrtle Beach Mayor Mark McBride announced his intentions to run against fellow Republican Rep. Tom Rice in South Carolina’s 7th District. In a press release, McBride said, “After serving two terms as the mayor of Myrtle Beach and earning a reputation for putting the safety of the city’s citizens first, I’m excited to continue my public service in the United States Congress.”
McBride has already taken shots at Rice over Rice’s voting record. Rice was one of ten House Republicans that voted in favor of impeaching Trump over the January 6th escapade.
Most of McBride’s press release attacked Rice: “Rice has proven himself to be another empty suit, and a tool of the disgraced GOP Establishment in Washington. He no longer deserves the privilege of representing the fine people in this district, and I’m the only candidate in this primary race with experience governing, and an America First track record. It’s time to retire Tom Rice, and I’m the man for the job.”
McBride served as Mayor of Myrtle Beach from 1998-2006. The former mayor has an impressive track record during those years. McBride was responsible for the building of five new police and fire stations in the city. During his time in office, massive developments flocked to Myrtle Beach, such as, Planet Hollywood & the Hard Rock Cafe, The Atlanta Braves Minor League Coastal Federal Field & The Convention Center expansion & hotel. McBride led 800 city employees on a consistent $200 million budget.
This congressional campaign does not mean it’s McBride’s first rodeo. McBride ran for U.S. Senate against Jim Demint (R-SC) in 2004. McBride’s platform was consistent with being pro-wall, anti-NAFTA, and pro-worker. McBride believes he’s, “stayed active in local and federal politics since holding office, and have been focused on putting America First for the better part of two decades. There is no candidate better to replace Tom Rice, and pick up President Trump’s America First torch here in South Carolina.”
Notably, McBride is also a traditional Christian who supports, “conservative family values”. McBride has been married for 34 years, has three adult children and two grandchildren. The congressional hopeful believes that, “traditional Christian, conservative family values…[are] one of America’s most pressing issues.” McBride believes, “we’ve gotten away from who we are [as a country]…I want my children and grandchildren to live in a country where order and prosperity are the norm…that’s what I’ll be fighting for every day.”
McBride has been praised in the America First Conservative side of Twitter. Political commentator Pete D’Abrosca praised McBride on Twitter, making sure to note McBride’s anti-LGBT viewpoints in the past.
“McBride served a colorful eight years, from 1997 to 2005, as mayor of Myrtle Beach, taking pride in stirring the pot along the Grand Strand. He once asked the National Guard to patrol Black Bike Week, which was unheard of at the time, and opposed a gay bar from opening.”
