On Wednesday, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez announced on Twitter that her grandmother was ill. She explained how she flew to Puerto Rico to visit her for the first time in 12 months. AOC saw that her home had some interior damage due to Hurricane Maria and accused the Trump administration of not doing enough to provide relief for Puerto Ricans like her grandmother.
We immediately got to work reaching out to community advocates and leaders and following the money.

What’s happening to Puerto Ricans is systemic. Much of it can be traced to La Junta, aka the Wall Street-connected fiscal control board that the US gave power to over the island.
I want to be clear – while Trump admin had a major role, it wasn’t just them.

La Junta, local policies, etc were all on the same page: policies that pushed out local families.
To turn this around, we need audits & get recovery relief to people ASAP, without the onerous strings.
Rightwing commentator, Matt Walsh, saw this and accused AOC of being a poor granddaughter. Walsh replied to her Twitter thread saying, “Shameful that you live in luxury while allowing your own grandmother to suffer in these squalid conditions.” AOC replied to Walsh, accusing him of not being able to fully understand her life due to the fact that she is a, “1st-gen, first-born daughter.”
You don’t even have a concept for the role that 1st-gen, first-born daughters play in their families.

My abuela is okay. But instead of only caring for mine & letting others suffer, I’m calling attention to the systemic injustices you seem totally fine w/ in having a US colony. https://t.co/QN0ZVoyDt2
Other right-wingers like, Lavern Spicer, Republican Congressionwoman candidate in FL-24, pointed out what they believe is hypocrisy in AOC’s talking points. Spicer replied, “Honey, you drive a Tesla and have two apartments. If your grandmother is living poor that’s because you don’t help her out. I’m surprised that a socialist wouldn’t redistribute that wealth to their grandma. Sad!”

Seemingly inspired by AOC responding to his tweet, Walsh created a GoFundMe for AOC’s grandmother’s home.
I will kick things off by donating $499, which happens to be the cost of a monthly lease payment for a Tesla. I challenge @benshapiro @michaeljknowles and @JeremyDBoreing to match this donation. Together we can change the world.

In the description of the GoFundMe, Walsh said this:
“On June 2nd, Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez reported to Twitter that her dear abuela has fallen ill and continues to live in squalid conditions since her home was ravaged by Hurricane María. One cannot be certain of the cost to repair grandma’s house, but surely most of the work could be completed for the price of AOC’s shiny Tesla Model 3.As AOC pointed out to us, we “don’t even have a concept for the role that [incredibly successful children of two American citizens…] play in their families,” but clearly caring for their own grandparent isn’t part of it.Says the congresswoman, “…instead of only caring for [my own grandmother] & letting others suffer, I’m calling attention to the systemic injustices…”No, seriously. She really said that. Sadly, virtue-signaling isn’t going to fix abuela’s roof. So we are. Let’s all kick in to help save AOC’s abuela’s ancestral home. Any amount is appreciated, but the cost of a monthly lease payment on that Tesla is around $499… All proceeds will be donated to abuela, if she will accept them.“
Clearly, Walsh is attempting to troll AOC and her situation. He is mocking her and seems to believe that her situation isn’t bad at all considering that AOC is very well off financially. AOC has yet to release any statement answering if she will accept the money. The GoFundMe had a goal of $48,990 but has raised a whopping $58,507 in only 4 hours.
