NPR: Kamala Harris is ‘Having Conversations With Folks’ Regarding a Filibuster ‘Carveout’ for ‘Voting Rights’ Bill

NPR reported that Kamala Harris is “having conversations with folks” about the filibuster in order to pass “voting rights” legislation.

NPR’s @asmamk spoke with @VP Harris today about voting rights. “I believe that of all of the issues that the United States Congress can take up, the right to vote is the right that unlocks all the other rights,” Harris said.”

Harris called voting rights one of her “highest priorities” and explained, “I believe that of all of the issues that the United States Congress can take up, the right to vote is the right that unlocks all the other rights.” Recent legislation to expand voting rights, in the Democrat’s terms, has been filibustered by the Republicans in the Senate.

With there being a 50-50 split in the Senate, the Democrats don’t have the 60 vote threshold in order to pass key legislation part of their agenda by overriding a filibuster. Progressive Democrats have been angered by this and thus have threatened to end the filibuster.

However, liberal Senators like Sinema (D-AZ) and Manchin (D-WV) have stated they will not support ending the filibuster which has caused tension among Democrats in the Senate. However, Harris hinted at speaking to Senators on ending the Filibuster saying, “I don’t mean this in any offense, but I’m not going to negotiate this way. But I’m certainly having conversations with folks.”

We will have to see what those conversations with “folks” on the Filibuster will entail, though ending the Filibuster may be impossible as there are not even 50 votes to do so. This makes the 2022 midterm elections very important as whoever controls the Senate may be able to block all of Biden’s agenda or carry it out without much opposition.
