Pro-Trump lawmakers in Oklahoma announced last Friday that they are renaming a highway in honor of the 45th president, Donald Trump. The bill was signed into law by Republican Governor Kevin Sitt. A twenty mile stretch of highway between Boise City, OK and the Texas border will be forever known as “President Donald J. Trump Highway”. The highway is a section of U.S. Route 287 that runs North to South across the Oklahoma panhandle. Oklahoma already has bridges named after Presidents Franklin Roosevelt and George W. Bush and a highway named after Lyndon Johnson.

Democratic lawmakers in Oklahoma persistently attempted to block this action. Previous Oklahoma law mandated that a person must be dead for at least three years before a state highway or bridge can be named after them. Oklahoma Republicans successfully changed that law before they presented this bill. Annually, the Oklahoma Legislature has a bridge-and-highway naming bill and it has never been controversial. However, Republican legislators slyly slipped in the Trump Highway proposal.
Some legislators wanted to name a highway after former president Trump. But statute dictated that a person must’ve passed away before a road is named for them. So what did we do? We just repealed that statute! Amazing what this body can accomplish when we really want something.

This pro-Trump sentiment is held, not only in Oklahoma, but across the nation. In March, Rep. Mike Loychik (R-OH) began producing legislation pushing to rename Mosquito Lake State Park to be called, “Donald J. Trump State Park”.

I’m proud to introduce legislation to rename Mosquito Lake State Park to “Donald J. Trump State Park.”

This 7,000 acre park is located in Trumbull County, Ohio. Representative Loychik said this on the legislation: “This legislation is meant to honor the commitment and dedication that our 45th President of the United States, Donald J. Trump, bestowed upon the great people of Trumbull County. This enthusiasm for our former president was also historic throughout the state of Ohio last November as he pushed for initiatives and policies that was very well-received with my constituency and the state.” Trump received a record number of votes in Ohio, which is shocking considering he lost the general election in 2020.
Ohioan Democrats have attacked freshman Rep. Loychik for this bill. Rep. Rich Brown tweeted saying,”Ohioans’ are struggling with an addiction crisis, economic disruption, and a pandemic that the other guy said would disappear just like magic. Instead of addressing these pressing issues, Ohio House Republicans are spending their time flattering the Insurrectionist in Chief.”
