Schumer Urges Biden Admin to Disregard Trump Era Policy and Halt Expulsions of Haitian Migrants

It was reported earlier today that rapid expulsions of Haitian migrants have been made possible by a pandemic-related authority adopted by former President Donald Trump in March 2020 that allows for migrants to be immediately removed from the country without an opportunity to seek asylum.

President Joe Biden has exempted unaccompanied children from the order but let the rest stand.

Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY) gave a speech on the Senate floor today where he brought up that situation and urged the Biden administration to disregard the policy and halt the expulsions.

“Mister president, we have all seen these horrible images coming from our southern border as Haitian asylum seekers simply looking to escape tyranny and the problems that they have sought have been met at our doorstep with unimaginable dignity,” Schumer began in a clip shared by Breaking 911.

Schumer then continued the false narrative that they have been hit with whips, which turned out to be horse reins.

“I urge President Biden and Secretary Mayorkas to immediately put a stop to these expulsions… We cannot continue these hateful and xenophobic Trump policies that disregard our refugee laws,” Schumer then insisted.

U.S. Sen Rand Paul (R-KY) responded on Newsmax to the request from Schumer and said in an interview, “I think Chuck Schumer, when he talks about completely open borders, is looking over his shoulder and AOC right behind him – more radical than he could possibly imagine.”

“That is a crazy notion, it will lead to more people coming. Already, tens of thousands of people are coming because they perceive the Biden administration as being weak on the border,” Paul explained.

U.S. House Rep Maxine Waters (D-CA) also recently requested that the Biden administration reverse course while mentioning Trump’s policies.

“Haitians fleeing violence & the lack of a credible government in Haiti are being treated like animals. U.S. government cowboys on horses used whips on Haitians as they sought refuge. Why are we following the Trump policies? This horrendous treatment of Haitians must STOP NOW,” Waters declared in a tweet.

Mayorkas defended his recent decision to grant Haitians temporary legal status due to political and civil strife in their homeland if they were in the United States on July 29, but not to those being sent back now and said, “We made an assessment based on the country conditions… that Haiti could in fact receive individuals safely.”
