Tom Cruise has Biggest Debut of His 40 Year Career in ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ with a $156 Million Domestic Opening Weekend

“Top Gun: Maverick” set a new record this Memorial Day weekend with an estimated $156 million domestically for its four-day opening weekend.

This gives the film the record for the biggest Memorial Day weekend opening, taking the spot from 2007’s “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End” which made $153 million in its Memorial Day opening weekend.

This is the first time, in Tom Cruise’s forty-year career that he has had a film made $100 million on opening weekend.

The sequel to the 1986 “Top Gun” was long-awaited and clearly has been well received. The film was originally set to premiere on June 24, 2020. With the Covid shutdowns, the release was put on hold. There was even speculation that the movie would be released on streaming. Cruise shut down those rumors saying, “I make movies for the big screen”.
