Florida Governor Ron DeSantis Pushes to Make it Harder to Vote by Mail in Florida

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) said Friday in a speech that he wants to make it harder for voters to vote by mail-in elections across the Sunshine State.

This comes as the State of Georgia has had multiple election integrity bills which target absentee ballots pass through subcommittees and are impending votes by the Georgia House of Representatives and could potentially become law. This would likely help the GOP in the state. Some in the GOP are worried about the future of the state as it seems to be trending blue following the Democrats taking both seats in the Senate.

Florida saw a 41% increase in mail-in voting in 2020 compared to 2016 with over nine million mail-in and in-person ballots returned. DeSantis said, “We did it right in 2020, we obviously gotta look and make sure we’re doing it better”.

Many Democrat states already automatically send out mail-in ballots to all citizens eligible to vote in the state which Republicans claimed was a source of voter fraud. DeSantis said that he will be asking Florida lawmakers to introduce and pass a bill that requires citizens to request mail-in ballots instead of the state sending them to all eligible voters across the state.

Republicans seem to be getting serious about protecting election integrity as there have already been over 2,000 election-related bills in state legislatures and if passed could change the voting patterns of states.

We will have to see what bills are passed if any to strengthen the confidence that Americans have in our election systems as it seems to be dropping.
