Liberal Governor Candidate Katie Hobbs Enraged as AZ GOP Files Lawsuit to End Early Voting

Led by Chairwoman Kelli Ward, the Arizona Republican Party has filed a lawsuit seeking to ban early voting in Arizona.

“JUST IN: New lawsuit filed by the @azgop asks the AZ Supreme Court to do away entirely with early voting. Their argument hinges on three words; “at the polls,” which are found in a snippet of the AZ constitution dealing with initiative and referendum.”

The main argument, based on the filling, appears to be that in the Arizona Constitution which states that voting rights are to be exercised “at the polls” which is contrary to dropping off one’s ballot. Early voting has been allowed in the states since 1991 after being created by the legislature.

The Party is asking the Arizona Supreme Court to rule against early voting which would deal a blow to the Democrat Party in the state. All seven of the justices on the Arizona Supreme Court have been appointed by Republican governors including five appointed by current Arizona Governor Doug Ducey (R).

Meanwhile, Arizona Secretary of State Katie Hobbs (D), who is also running for Governor, took to Twitter to go after the Azirona GOP for their suit. Hobbs called this lawsuit an “attempt to make voting more difficult” and “ridiculous” while she defended early voting as “secure” and “popular”.

“Our early voting system is secure and popular. This lawsuit filed by the Republican Party of Arizona has a single aim–to make it more difficult to vote. I look forward to once again defending the voters of Arizona and defeating this ridiculous attempt to undermine our elections.”

Attorney Alexander Kolodin, who is representing the Arizona GOP, said, “Mail-in ballots, by their very nature, cannot be made entirely secret or free from coercion. If bad actors wish to pay for votes or coerce electors to vote a certain way, there is nothing to stop them from standing over electors as they complete their ballots.”
