NY State Lawmaker Received Multiple Racist Messages and Copies of Gov Cuomo’s Book After Criticizing the Governor

Democrat Assemblyman from Queens, Ron Kim, told the New York Post that he has been on the receiving end of a multitude of hateful or racist emails and Facebook messages over his criticisms of how Cuomo handled nursing homes during the pandemic.

Some of these messages have labeled Kim, an Asian man, as a “gook” who’s “rotten to the core” and questioned whether Kim’s “fixation” on Cuomo is negatively affecting his marriage.

Another messenger implied that God hates Kim and is angry at him due to his criticisms directed towards Kim. The writer recommended that Kim repent for his “sin” and make amends with Governor Cuomo since God is on Cuomo’s side: “If I were you I would repent. Make peace with the governor. Because time is short. You don’t want to make God angry. The lord Jesus has his back. He will protect him…And his enemies will be scattered.”

Assemblyman Kim also said that seemingly in an attempt to troll him, random haters have sent Kim more than a dozen books authored by Governor Cuomo. Out of fear for his safety, Kim has been in communications with the NYPD and the state Assembly will be setting up surveillance cameras surrounding his district office. Kim blames Cuomo for a lot of the harassment he’s faced, saying, “he encourages that kind of culture.”

Kim has consistently attacked Cuomo, primarily over the nursing home chaos that Cuomo caused. In response to the January attorney general’s report, exposing how many New Yorkers died in hospitals, Cuomo shockingly said, “Who cares [if they] died in the hospital, died in a nursing home? They died.” This amazed Kim, who was shocked a three-term Governor would say something as insensitive as that. Kim said, “Who talks like that about older adults? A coward. One hundred percent, a coward. An abuser. Someone who abuses their power would say that.”

This fight against Cuomo seems to be fueled by a personal experience Kim suffered when his own uncle died in a nursing home due to coronavirus symptoms. Kim said he didn’t watch TV for 6 months because he would “see his brother [Chris Cuomo] and Andrew cracking jokes…I couldn’t take it because I felt gaslit at times…felt so demoralized and my constituents, I had a re-election, they kept telling me, ‘Don’t attack the governor. He is polling in 80 percent, 90 percent. You’re going to lose your re-election if you attack the governor,’…[but] I didn’t care because people were dying. People needed justice, people needed truth.”

Rich Azzopardi, a spokesman for Gov. Cuomo accused Kim of telling lies about Cuomo, saying, “Ron Kim has told many lies about this administration, but there should be zero tolerance for hate speech and racially motivated harassment.” Referring to Kim’s agitators, Azzopardi said, “We’re not in contact with these individuals. Period.”
