South Carolina Gov Pushes for Investigation into Obscene Materials in Public School Libraries After Parents Petition to Remove Sexually Explicit LGBTQ Book in SC School

Republican South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster sent a letter to the South Carolina Department of Education asking for an LGBTQ book to be removed from schools.

“South Carolina Gov. Henry McMaster has requested an investigation into “obscene materials” in public school libraries after parents in Fort Mill expressed concern over the book, “Gender Queer: A Memoir” by Maia Kobabe.”

The book, “Gender Queer: A memoir” by Maia Kobabe ended up in the Fort Mills school district and parents in the district signed a petition to have the book removed from the school. This comes as parents across the country have been pushing back against Critical Race Theory and extreme gender ideology.

Governor McMaster said, “For sexually explicit materials of this nature to have ever been introduced or allowed in South Carolina’s schools, it is obvious that there is or was either a lack of, or a breakdown in, any existing oversight processes or the absence of appropriate screening standards.”

McMaster also said, “It has come to my attention that public schools in South Carolina may be providing students with access—whether in school libraries, electronic databases, or both—to completely inappropriate books and materials, including sexually explicit and obscene images or depictions.”

We will have to see how the South Carolina Department of Education responds as Republicans clearly don’t want sexually-explicit books that push extreme gender ideology in schools. Once again, parents are making their voices heard in showing what they want their children to read and learn.
