Black Man Who Sucker Punched White Child Sentenced to 7 Years

Cedric Moore, the African American, who was seen randomly punching a 12-year-old-boy back in July, was sentenced to 7 years in prison. Moore changed his plea from not guilty to guilty earlier in May and was sentenced for second-degree assault.

In Cape Girardeau, Missouri, 12-year-old Ethan Hagler was dancing on a Main Street sidewalk with his dance instructor Michael Curry and another young boy watching. A Black SUV pulled up and the perpetrator, Moore, jumped out, snuck up behind the dancing child before punching him to the ground and running back to the SUV. The dance instructor, Curry, tried to run after Moore but Moore fled in the SUV.

VIEWER DISCRETION ADVISED:

Curry said this according to 13 News: “And all of a sudden I see him punch my kid and instantly, my first reaction is what? Why? You know, I tried to chase him back to the car. And as soon as I got the car, I saw there was two other people in the car. So I had to think about my child. He’s laying on the ground. And from there, it was a lot of people that came up to help, especially Shaker’s the bar downtown that we usually set up in front of.”

The 12-year-old received a bloody nose and concussion. His mother, Stephanie Hagler, said blood was pooling on the sidewalk. Mrs. Hagler described her child as tough, brave, and a fighter: “I’ve never seen a tougher, braver kid, especially in that kind of a situation. You know, he just held his head back. He was not going to let somebody see him cry. He was so strong and so brave when he had no reason to have to be so.”

Thankfully, justice has been served, although some may think it should have been a hate crime and may have had the races been reversed. Local police used the video of the attack to identify Moore which led to him turning himself in. Moore has a criminal past in which he had to plead guilty to driving under the influence and endangering the welfare of a child in 2019.

The local police department said, “The public has understandably expressed a desire to see Moore charged with a hate crime for this heinous crime.” However, a hate crime was not applied.

In a statement the department said, “In accordance with state statutes, this charge would only apply if the assault was categorized to a lesser degree, which would not be in the best interest of seeking true justice for the victim.”
