CA Governor Newsom Reportedly Using Taxpayer Money To Promote Vaccinations Lottery-Style in Part by Handing Out $50 Bills

Governor of California, Gavin Newsom, was seen approaching citizens, and passing out $50 if they told him they took the COVID-19 vaccination. Newsom approached a lady saying, “You got your shot?” and when she replied, “I just got my shot”, Newsom pulls out a $50 bill and said, “I mean then I owe you $50.”

On May 27th, Newsom announced a “Vax for the Win” program to incentivize vaccinations in California.

This incentive program pulls $116.5 million from the budget to motivate the estimated 37% of unvaccinated Californians to receive the vaccine. $100 million will go towards $50 prepaid gift cards or grocery gift cards to be passed out to vaccinated citizens. The Governor is also promoting a lottery type event, called “$50,000 Fridays” in which $1.5 million in cash prizes will be awarded to vaccinated citizens. Thirty winners will be selected for the $50,000 Friday program and receive 50k each in a random lottery style drawing. The other $15 million will be divided up between 10 winners on June 15th, with each winner receiving $1.5 million.

Newsom claims that this program is designed to nudge unvaccinated people in “hard-to-reach communities” to get vaccinated while also “thanking” everyone who has already been vaccinated. The governor said, “Getting every eligible Californian vaccinated is how we bring our state roaring back from this pandemic. California has already made incredible progress in the fight against COVID-19, with the lowest case rates in the country, while administering millions more vaccines than any other state. But we aren’t stopping there, we’re doing everything it takes to get Californians vaccinated as we approach June 15 to help us fully reopen safely.”

The Department of Public Health Director and State Public Health Director, Dr. Tomas J Aragon said, “The State will work closely with our partners at local health departments and community-based organizations to ensure the program reaches families living in communities with the lowest vaccination rates, who might face language barriers and other obstacles.”

This program infuriated many Conservative commentators like Cristina Laila of the Gateway Pundit. The Gateway Pundit described this program as, “bribing the poor and lower middle class.” Scott Hounsell of Red State News said, “This lottery idea is potentially the dumbest governmental action I have seen in a long time, and that list is extremely long.  They are talking about 116 million dollars, which could fix a lot of roads or upgrade a lot of energy and water infrastructure.  You know… like the actual responsibilities that the government has taken upon them.”

This move could be one of Newsom’s last large initiatives as he may face a recall election in 2021.
